The Best Places to Live in the U.S. in 2017 and McAllen made it (barely)

The Best Places to Live in the U.S. in 2017 and McAllen made it (barely)

“U.S. News & World Report” just released its annual list of the best cities to live in. They look at things like quality of life, and how many jobs there are.

Last year, Denver took the top spot. But this year it’s Austin, Texas. The job market is good, crime is pretty low, and there’s plenty of stuff to do. Here are the top ten . . . plus McAllen

1. Austin.

2. Denver.

3. San Jose, California.

4. Washington, D.C.

5. Fayetteville, Arkansas. (It’s in the northwest corner of the state, near the Missouri and Oklahoma borders.)

6. Seattle.

7. The Raleigh-Durham area in North Carolina.

8. Boston.

9. Des Moines, Iowa.

10. Salt Lake City, Utah.

94. McAllen, Texas

The Latest on Mariah Carey’s Disastrous Performance on New Year’s

MARIAH CAREY was EASILY the most memorable act on “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest” this year.

If you didn’t see it, there were some technical difficulties, and rather than perform though it, Mariah just awkwardly walked around onstage, talking to the crowd while her songs played in the background.

During her first song, she complained about not being able to hear her backing track, and at one point she said, quote, “We didn’t have a soundcheck, but it’s New Year’s baby.  That’s okay.”

She started fake-singing the second song, but then abruptly stopped . . . revealing that she’d been lip-synching.  But that wasn’t surprising, since she TOLD the crowd ahead of time that she’d give it a go because the backing track was the full album version.

Afterward, her rep said Mariah told the producers ahead of time that her in-ear monitors weren’t working, but they didn’t do anything about it.  The rep also accused them of “[setting] her up to fail” for ratings during the later West Coast feed.

Mariah’s people tried to get the producers to cut the performance from the West Coast broadcast . . . but they got shot down.  ABC refused.

Her manager said, quote, “[An exec] said he couldn’t do that.  I asked him why would they want to run a performance with mechanical glitches, unless they just want eyeballs at any expense.  It’s not artist friendly.”

But the producers said they had “no involvement” in the situation, and that allegations that they’d intentionally sabotaged her performance were, quote, “defamatory, outrageous, and frankly absurd.”

There’s talk that Mariah was the one that refused to do a soundcheck, but her manager says she was planning to do one, and was there in plenty of time.

On Sunday, Mariah Tweeted, quote, “[Stuff] happens.  Have a happy and healthy new year everybody!  Here’s to making more headlines in 2017.”  (She really said “[S-word] happens . . .”)

One last note, Mariah’s people say the producers were BEGGING her to do the show.  Quote, “She was doing them a favor.  [The producer’s] direct request was, ‘I’m begging you to do this.  America needs this moment after Donald Trump, et cetera.’  What a bunch of nonsense.”  (???)

Government Admits That No Study Has Ever Proven Flossing Is Effective

Government Admits That No Study Has Ever Proven Flossing Is Effective

MEDICAL BENEFITS OF DENTAL FLOSS UNPROVEN

Dr. Wayne Aldredge, president of the American Academy of Periodontology, demonstrates how dental floss should be used in Holmdel, N.J. It’s one of the most universal recommendations in all of public health: Floss daily to prevent gum disease and cavities. Except there’s little proof that flossing works. When the federal government issued its 2016 dietary guidelines, the flossing recommendation had been removed, without notice. (AP Photo/Julio Cortez)

Well you can finally stop lying to your dentist about flossing.

The Associated Press just looked at the research on the benefits of flossing, and they got the Department of Health and Human Services to admit, quote, “The effectiveness of flossing has never been researched, as required.”

There have been plenty of studies on flossing, but none of them have definitively found that it helps you get rid of plaque or prevents gum disease. The AP looked into 25 of the biggest studies and found all of them were unreliable.

So why has the government been recommending that we all floss every day for almost four decades?

A dentist from the National Institutes of Health summed it up. Quote, “It’s low risk, low cost. We know there’s a possibility that it works, so we feel comfortable telling people to go ahead and do it.”

That’s probably true, except for one thing: Floss is a $2 BILLION market around the world, and half of that comes from the United States.

A Hot Bath Is Just As Good For You As Exercising?

A Hot Bath Is Just As Good For You As Exercising?

If you HATE exercising, but like the idea of, you know, burning a few calories once in a while . . . consider this an early Christmas present.

A new study out of Loughborough University in England found that taking a HOT BATH can give you pretty much all of the same effects as exercising.

The researchers found that a hot bath reduces your blood pressure, gets your metabolism going, AND burns calories.

A half hour in a hot tub burned 140 calories, which is the same as a half hour walk.

Now, a bath doesn’t burn as many calories as more intense exercise, and there are plenty of other health benefits you can only get from exercising . . . but getting into a hot tub is definitely better than nothing.

According to the researchers, your body releases proteins when it’s exposed to exercise OR heat . . . which is why exercise and baths have similar effects.

A Guy Dumped a Girl He Met on PlentyOfFish.com . . . So She Filled His Hot Tub With Plenty of Fish

A Guy Dumped a Girl He Met on PlentyOfFish.com . . . So She Filled His Hot Tub With Plenty of Fish

Hot tub full of fish

A 35-year-old woman named Zoe Jackson from North Yorkshire, England met 46-year-old Gerard Brogan last January on the dating website PlentyOfFish.com.

And they dated for about three months. But Gerard says Zoe started getting too intense. And then she dropped a bomb . . . she had SIX children. So he told her he wasn’t ready to commit, and dumped her.

So how do you get REVENGE when a relationship from PlentyOfFish.com goes south? Zoe snuck into his backyard, and filled his hot tub with . . . plenty of fish. Dead fish.

He didn’t find them until he got home from a trip two days later, and they’d been cooking in the hot water that entire time. So obviously his hot tub was ruined.

Zoe was in court this week and pleaded guilty to criminal damage. She got probation and was ordered to pay Gerard $750.
